Rolls and bales

Fabric is dense, heavy cargo and is almost always charged by weight. That sets it apart from apparel and furniture and makes quoting predictable. The difficulty is not the price — it is roll dimensions and protection from moisture.

Why fabric is charged by weight

Rolled fabric runs at 250–450 kg/m³ depending on the material. That is above a truck's balance point of 310 kg/m³, so the trailer hits its payload limit before it fills on volume. The practical consequence: with fabric, volume barely matters and repacking brings little saving.

Roll dimensions: tell us in advance

A standard 1.5–1.6 m roll causes no trouble. But upholstery and technical fabrics come up to three metres wide, and such a roll can only be loaded into a curtainsider a certain way. Rolls also cannot be bent — a crease leaves a permanent mark and downgrades the goods.

So send us the roll width, diameter, weight per roll and quantity when asking for a quote. Without those figures the quote is approximate and loading can bring surprises.

Moisture and packing

Fabric is more sensitive to moisture and odours than most cargo. Temperature swings along the route — severe on mountain passes in winter — create condensation inside the curtain.

  • Polyethylene wrap on every roll — the basic protection, mandatory
  • Closed roll ends — that is where moisture gets into the cloth
  • Not loaded flush against the curtain — we account for this at loading
  • Kept away from odorous cargo — chemicals, rubber, treated leather
  • Pallets or racks for wide and heavy rolls

Where fabric comes from

The main textile hub in China is Shaoxing and the Keqiao market in Zhejiang province, the largest fabric trading venue in the world. Yiwu is nearby for hardware, threads and accessories, which makes combining purchases into one shipment convenient.

Frequently asked questions

How much does fabric shipping from China cost?

From $1.8 per kg from Guangzhou and Yiwu, from $1.2 from Urumqi. Fabric is dense, so it is charged by weight and the quote is predictable.

What do you need for a quote?

Roll width, diameter, weight per roll and quantity. For rolls wider than two metres this is essential — the loading plan depends on it.

How is fabric protected from moisture?

Every roll is wrapped in polyethylene with closed ends, loaded away from the curtain and kept separate from odorous cargo.
