Consolidated cargo or a dedicated truck — the question appears the moment your orders grow. Getting it wrong is expensive both ways: paying for empty space, or moving eight tonnes in a shared trailer.

The difference

LTL, consolidated cargo. Your goods travel with other shippers. You pay for your own weight and volume, minimum 10 kg. The cargo waits at the warehouse until the truck is built.

FTL, a full truck. The trailer goes out for your cargo alone. You pay for the truck whether you fill it 70% or 100%. It leaves immediately and nothing is reloaded in transit.

Where the break-even sits

Multiply your weight by the consolidated rate and compare with the truck price. On Guangzhou — Bishkek at $1.8 per kg and $6,500 per truck:

  • 3,000 kg × $1.8 = $5,400 — consolidated wins
  • 3,600 kg × $1.8 = $6,480 — roughly equal
  • 5,000 kg × $1.8 = $9,000 — the truck saves $2,500
Those figures assume weight-based pricing. If the cargo is light and bulky the break-even shifts: 90 m³ can fill up at three tonnes. So the calculation is run on both weight and volume, and whichever fills first decides.

When a truck wins even at a higher price

  • Fragile cargo. In a shared trailer your goods sit next to someone else's and may be moved in transit. A dedicated truck is loaded once and unloaded once
  • Seasonal deadlines. Waiting for the trailer to fill costs more than the price gap
  • A single uniform batch from one supplier. Load at the factory, seal, go — no intermediate warehouse
  • Cargo you do not want mixed. Odorous goods, dusty materials, anything that could damage a neighbour

When consolidated cargo is objectively better

  • Regular small orders. Moving 500 kg every two weeks beats one truck per quarter — your money is not sitting in stock
  • A first order. Testing demand with 200 kg is smarter than committing to a trailer
  • Goods from several suppliers. This is what warehouse consolidation exists for
